Technology

Regiopolis-Notre Dame offers a range of technology courses that allow students to explore and develop new skills. These include Construction, Communications, Computers, Cosmetology, Design, and Robotics. RND technology courses are student-centered and inquiry-based. Here, we bring the real world into the classroom through hands-on learning for the 21st century.

Grade 9 Exploring Technologies

TAS1O (Open)

This course enables students to explore a number of different technologies throughout the semester. Students will be given the opportunity to design and create products and/or provide services related to various technological areas. Students will work with a variety of tools, equipment, appliances and software commonly used in industry. Students will develop an awareness of environmental and societal issues and will begin to explore secondary and postsecondary education and training pathways leading to careers in technology-related fields.

Prerequisite: None

This course will include components of Construction/Woodshop, Food and Nutrition, Robotics, and Communication Technologies. It is strongly recommended for students who wish to specialize in focused technological courses which run in grades 10, 11 and 12.

Technological Design

TDJ3M/3E, TDJ4M/4E

Utilizing Computer Aided Design, students will learn the Design Process: Ask a Question, Think & Plan, Create & Draw, Revise & Improve. This course is best described with the use of a few examples:

What would your dream home consist of?

Research different styles of architecture
Layout an initial floor plan
Use software to create the blueprint drawings including 3-D furniture, windows, doors, stairs, and roof.

What makes a kite fly?

How do different designs work?
Create the instructions and drawings for your own kite

The city of Kingston needs a new parking lot!

What are the designs standards we need to meet?
How do we include accessible spaces and lighting while providing effective traffic flow?

How could we create an accurate contour map?

Let’s go outside and use surveying equipment to gather the necessary data
Input the information to generate maps and cross-sections

These are some of the possible projects that students may explore individually or in teams. If you have creative ideas, an eye for detail, and an interest in computer-aided design, this is for you!

Construction Technology

The Exploring Technologies and Construction Technology program introduces students to the exciting world of skilled trades and related career paths. Through hands-on learning with state-of-the-art technology, students create fun projects they get to keep. Engaging topics such as welding, electrical wiring, house framing, blueprint reading, and general carpentry provide valuable skills while showcasing opportunities in the growing skilled trades sector.

RND's Communications Technology program allows students to explore the many aspects of digital communication while producing projects in the areas of video & movie production, audio production, photography & graphic design and animation. "CommTech" students have access to the latest technology in these mediums and will learn concepts and techniques which meet current industry standards. Communications Technology is offered in grades 10, 11 and 12 (TGJ2O, TGJ3M/O, TGJ4M/O)

Hair and Aesthetics

Grade 10 Health Care TPJ2O

This course introduces students to personal health promotion, child and adolescent health concerns, and a variety of medical services, treatments, and technologies. Students will become familiar with various instruments and equipment and will learn about human anatomy, organs, and body chemistry, as well as the effects that lifestyle choices can have on personal well-being.

Students will also complete a basic Cosmetology unit: getting their own mannequin and learning basics of hair styling and aesthetics.

Grade 11 Hair and Aesthetics TXJ3E

This course enables students to develop knowledge and skills in cosmetology and offers a variety of applications that will equip students to provide services for a diverse clientele. Students will identify trends in the hairstyling and aesthetics industry, learn about related health and safety laws, and expand their communication and interpersonal skills through interactions with peers and clients. Students will also consider environmental and societal issues related to the industry and will acquire a more detailed knowledge of apprenticeships and direct-entry work positions.

Grade 12 Hair and Aesthetics TXJ4E

This course enables students to develop increased proficiency in a wide range of hairstyling and aesthetics services. Working in a salon/spa team environment, students will strengthen their fundamental cosmetology skills and develop an understanding of common business practices and strategies in the salon/spa industry. Students will also expand their understanding of environmental and societal issues and their knowledge of postsecondary destinations in the hairstyling and aesthetics industry.
